Definition of conservation and restoration
(Actively) conserving means treatment of the object to retain the current situation (e.g. removal of dirt, the fixing of loose parts etc.) To restore means realising an earlier condition of the object involved and is partly focused on the outside (e.g. missing parts are replaced, damages are repaired etc.). In actual practice these two terms are often applied together or one after the other.
Research
The work of art is examined in the Restoration studio. (Sometimes the research is done on the location where the work of art is placed if it is too heavy to handle). Next the most appropiate restorer will be chosen, in some cases the restoration is best be done interdisciplinary. If necessary, more specific research will be done (if necessary, in assocation with the ICN). (This particular procedure will only be chosen after consultation with the client since extra costs may be involved).
Cost estimate in advance
After examination by the various restorers involved, the customer will receive an estimation of the costs beforehand and the date of completion. After agreement with the customer, the actual restoration will be started.
Insurance art items
Insurance for transport and storage of the art items in our Restoration Studio is the responsibility of the owner. Please note that in all matters relating to price quotations and commissioned work both you and we are subject to the General Terms and Conditions of the Netherlands association of restorers Restauratoren Nederland, registered with Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce (Kamer van Koophandel Apeldoorn). You can consult the full text of these terms and conditions at our studio.
Reversible
The method of working preferred is the reversible one: this means that it will be possible to undo the restoration in the future when there will be perhaps better techniques of restoring. A photo report will be made before, during and after the restoration. The damages will be described as well as the materials used during the restoration (name and composition). This report will be recorded in the archive of the Restauratie-Atelier. If desired, the customer can have a copy of this report by paying a supplement.
